BayEstimator – UnderEstimated?

  • We all – eBay sellers – know the importance of having optimized listing titles. Since the ‘Best Match’ option is used as the default search results filter, using the proper keywords is one of the key factors to insure high rankings.

We’re not talking about tricking the system here. We’re not going to reveal some magic formula insuring your listing will come up on the very top of the eBay search results. What we’re talking about here is – making sure you’re targeting the right eBay buyers’ niche and don’t waste money on listings no one is visiting!

The common sense is to write the listing title as it is. Let’s say, you want to list a Bratz dolls set. You will most likely write something like ‘Brand NEW Bratz Dolls Set With Accessories’. Of course you have to reveal what’s included in the listing because 99% of eBay buyers will enter ‘Bratz dolls’ in the search box to find the product.

However, there are other words which attract potential buyers. In other words, when people search for Bratz dolls, their attention gets grabbed by some other descriptions and this decides whether a particular listing will be clicked on or not.

The average Joes don’t know what these words are. But we at SAT are using a completely FREE and effective tool that helps optimize the eBay listings for the best performance possible! Welcome to BayEstimator – a tool showing you the nitty gritty of eBay search laboratory!

Before you can get most out of this tool, you should read the following instructions though. The simplest things may present a whole lot of difficulties at the beginning – so open the BayEstimator and follow us step-by-step.

    1. First of all – enter your listing item’s description in the text box and hit ‘Submit’. We’ll take ‘Bratz dolls’ as an example, but you can choose whatever is more relevant in your case.

    2. As we can see, there are three options you can optimize your listing for. You can go for ‘bratz’, ‘dolls’, or both – ‘bratz dolls’. Which one should you go for? The answer is simple – you have to find high demand (popularity) and low supply (availability) keywords. In this case it’s clearly ‘bratz dolls’, so click on the link ‘bratz dolls’ to see what happening in the eBay laboratory!

    3. What we see now is the most precious information we can possibly obtain to get high rankings in the eBay search engine! In the table to the right we can see the keywords buyers like when searching for ‘bratz dolls’ sorted by importance.

So what you want to do now is – create a listing title in the ‘modified listing title’ box using the old words ‘bratz dolls’ AND as many from the table as possible. So what we could come up with is – ‘Lot of *BRATZ* DOLLS with SHOES and ACCESSORIES CLOTHES’. Then hit the ‘Submit’ button again (leaving ‘bratz dolls’ as ‘Chosen search query’).

Now you can see a full analysis of your listing title. In the top table you can see importance of each word in the title (the bigger the green circle – the more important it is).

In the table to the left you can see how well optimized your title is for all the keywords in the first column. As you can see, our listing will perform at its best not only under ‘bratz dolls’, but also a score of other keywords buyers will enter in the eBay search box!

    * * *

At last – a few tips when optimizing your listing titles:

    * Create a few listing titles for the same items for one keyword and see how they perform over time. You’ll be able to analyze the conversion rate of each title and keep the ones bringing in most sales/bids.

    * Optimize your listings for different keywords to reach broader auditory. In our example we optimized the title under the keyword ‘Bratz dolls’, but it would be wise to create a few listings for specific dolls – whether it’s Yasmin or Cloe etc.

    * You can include some tricky triggers in the listings to attract attention of buyers who don’t even search for Bratz. For instance, you can create a listing ‘BARBY Dolls? NEW BRATZ Are In Fashion Now!’ to play with those peoples’ emotions who are still looking for Barby dolls. Maybe you can persuade them for the opposite!

Keep on twisting and improving your listings, and the long-term results will reflect on your eBay earnings!

    Have a spicy auction,
    SAT Team

  1. Thanks for the post

  2. I used the tool to make a fully green title consisting of legitimate item relevant words, which didn’t make any difference at all in a search on the keyword phrase it was optimized for. All that did give me a boost in rank was offering free shipping.

Any insights on why the title words aren’t having any effect?

  3. You made some good points there. I did a search on the topic and found most people agree with what you said.

  4. I used to struggle with keyword research, couldn’t figure it out to save my life. I wouldn’t know a good keyword even if it came up and bit me. I found some software which helped, and your post offered up some good key points to think about.
