The times are hard. Economy in recession, online shoppers are saving money and seeking for more bargains. This in turn translates into bigger competition among online sellers.

But it’s been said many times and we’ll repeat it again – it’s about selling SMART that will make the difference. And one of those smart things that gives the edge to every online entrepreneur is SEO – Search Engine Optimization.

SEO. Sounds very technical, doesn’t it? How many times you’ve heard this term and thought – “Oh God, it must be so complicated! Most likely only the big companies can afford hiring SEO specialists and maintain high Search Engine rankings…”

In all fairness, nothing could be further from the truth, our dear eBay seller!

No matter how small you are on eBay, the chances for your product’s listing to appear on Search Engine search results are quite high since the eBay website is very important in any Search Engine’s eyes. Other website’s containing millions of pages – EzineArticles.com, Squidoo.com, Wikipedia.org and others always tend to perform very well in Google.com, Yahoo.com, Ask.com and other popular Search Engines.

But no doubt Google has the biggest traffic share on the Web – both in the States and across the Atlantics. So for the sake of simplicity we’ll replace mentioning Search Engines with Google from now on.
But if you’re not very familiar with this whole Internet searching mechanism, you might think – “Is appearing on Google so important for me? Surely the biggest market exposure is gained by appearing in eBay’s search results?” Well, better think twice before making such a statement! You’re only partially correct.

The repeated eBay shoppers will indeed go to eBay in the first place before starting searching the things they’d like to buy. But still a significant number of folks will start their online shopping with going to the most popular search engine – namely, Google, and start their search from there.

Sure, the numbers will vary over time and there are some indications that Google is changing the things a little bit. Nonetheless, the important fact remains – you can get plenty of visitors to your eBay Shop and listings from Google.com and other Search Engines.

So what’s this SEO is all about? For us, ordinary eBay sellers, the main thing to focus on is the keywords. Those are the search phrases used by the shoppers to look up the things they want to buy.
“Antique lamps” and “children’s shoes size 12” are examples of keywords entered in Google or eBay search windows to bring up a list of available search results. So obviously you need to figure out what are the most fitting keywords for your products and on most of occasions it’s a common sense.

However, not always you can guess what is the most sought keyword for a particular item, so there are two very useful tools that come handy to get a very good idea on what are the exact keywords used by online shoppers.

One is BayEstimator – a tool that will show you what keywords the eBay shoppers enter when looking for particular products. A tutorial on using the BayEstimator tool can be found in this blog post.

The second is the Google’s Keyword tool and it can be used very effectively to find out what are the search terms entered by Google users to look up the respective products. Using this tool is also very simple – you just need to enter a main keyword, let’s say, “Computer motherboards”, and the Keyword Tool is going to show you the search volume of this and related keywords.

As a result of using these two tools you will have found relevant keywords for describe your products in eBay listing headline and description, and here you can read a very simple action plan on how to simply and effectively use the keywords in your eBay listings.

In a nutshell you need to include the main keyword in the eBay listing’s title and throughout the description and don’t forget to write the description of around 200 or more words. That way you will give both eBay and Google high quality content to bring up in search results.

More visitors, more sales, more recession-proof income!

So much about eBay SEO this time, it really shouldn’t take you more than 30 minutes to understand and research. And don’t forget to take action and implement those few simple steps!

And of course, if you write a few useful eBay Guides and Reviews – you will increase the chances of someone finding your listings via Google even more.

Remember – every additional chunk of text and every link pointing to your eBay Shop and listings may result in a good number of additional sales!

Wishing you easy and profitable eBay SEO,

Hello eBay Seller!

So many worrying things are happening in the business world these days and we’re sure you’ve read the headlines telling that eBay will slash their workforce by 10% as an attempt to improve their dwindling stock price, for example.

Yes, the global economy is undergoing a major shift at the moment and the companies are reacting accordingly trying to cut the costs as much as possible. However, smart folks don’t focus solely on reducing the expenses by all means. What they do instead is – analyze the overall performance of the company and try to increase the productivity and streamline the processes.

Even eBay – despite the ongoing dissatisfaction among the auction sellers – have started thinking about this. The lowered listing fees and the extended auction listings are just a small part of what the eBay’s Chief Executive John Donahoe is planning to carry out in the nearest future.

Starting in late October this year, eBay will incorporate another payment processor – ProPay – within their payment platform, which will certainly enhance both the sellers’ and the shoppers’ experience.

ProPay, for example, allows the shoppers to remotely “swipe” and process credit cards and the information is immediately encrypted and processed real time through ProPay’s virtual terminal. This is a step towards a 100% paperless transaction system and from now on the merchants and the shoppers will have three main payment options – credit card, PayPal or ProPay.

Also the eBay’s acquisition of Bill Me Later – a company which offers online shoppers instant credits without pre-registration or a credit card, is expected to make the shopping easier and increase eBay’s competitiveness in the market with the biggest rival being Amozon.com, of course.

However, what you – as a seller who has to think about your own profits – can do to survive in these tough times?

The answer is – look at what eBay are doing and apply it on your personal level. Like eBay’s Chief John Donahoe, you should definitely conduct an analysis of your eBay business.

However, it doesn’t have to be a complicated and long process. The 80/20 rule is a universal benchmark, and if you’re not really familiar with it – here it goes: around 80% of your eBay selling profits come from just 20% of your eBay listings!

What this means for you? You have to look at around three past month’s sales figures and figure out which listings bring very little revenue. The surprising moment will emerge upon realization that you’ve probably spent 80% of your time on creating eBay listings that bring only 20% of the income!

Conclusion – focus on creating the listings which bring you the most revenue. This includes sorting out which listing description, design and headline combination works the least effective and you just have to stop using those.

Also calculate which products you list just for the sake of listing, just because they will make your eBay store look bigger.

Sure, you have to give your customers the choice; otherwise they will find other sellers offering a bigger variety. However, if you sell, for example, a large array of kids clothing, you definitely have to understand which 20% of your merchandise is worth the 80% of your business. Then you can start looking for similar products to expand your business and increase your profits exponentially – not gradually!

To your auction selling success,

Great news! Probably the best news for any eBay seller within the last few years!

Buy It Now listings extended up to 30 days, insertion listing fees reduced to measly 35 cents for any amount of identical merchandise – how does it sound for you? Is it too good to be true? Not this time!

These changes will take effect on 16 September 2008 and it has been already announced back on 20 August by Lorrie Norrington – the President of eBay Marketplaces.

These new changes is really a big step towards a better selling experience on eBay. The auction style listing fees remain unchanged and those who prefer using the auction listings will certainly be able to continue to do so. After all, originally eBay was established as an online auction marketplace. And if your listing’s starting price is low enough – so are your auction listing fees.

But taking into account the latest tendencies of increasing number of BIN (Buy It Now) listings, eBay had to do something. Especially – considering their dwindling stock price and success of their biggest rival – Amazon.com

It’s been long observed that many sellers are transferring their online selling activities to Amazon due to their more flexible fixed price structure. Well – now finally eBay have made their counter-move and we just can’t deny – it will definitely boost their sales, help keeping the existing sellers and attract new ones.

But now – let’s have a look at how exactly it’s going to improve your selling figures!

A $200 digital camera that sells after being listed three times for up to 21 days would currently cost a seller $17.31 in total fees ($9.00 in insertion fees plus $8.31 in final value fees), with 52 percent paid upfront for the listing. Under the new pricing, the total cost would be only $11.10 (35 cents in insertion fees plus $10.75 in final value fees), a savings of 36 percent, with only 3 percent paid upfront for the listing.

A $25 collectible item that sells after being listed three times for up to 21 days would currently cost a seller $5.19 in total fees ($3.00 in insertion fees plus $2.19 in final value fees), with 58 percent paid upfront for the listing. Under the new pricing, the total cost would be only $3.35 (35 cents in insertion fees plus $3.00 in final value fees), a savings of 35 percent, with only 10 percent paid upfront for the listing.

A $50 clothing item that sells after being listed three times for up to 21 days would currently cost a seller $9.06 in total fees ($6.00 in insertion fees plus $3.06 in final value fees), with 66 percent paid upfront for the listing. Under the new pricing, the total cost would be only $6.35 (35 cents in insertion fees plus $6.00 in final value fees), a savings of 30 percent, with only 6 percent paid upfront for the listing.

How does this sound for you, eBay seller? We at SAT think it’s definitely help you save serious money and make more sales – mainly due to the following factors:

* You can list your items for up to 30 days – and pay a measly fee of only 35 cent. Just think about the number of eBay shoppers who are going to see your listing during the one month’s time – let alone the fact that you can list a dozen of items under one listing!

* In Media categories – Books, Video Games, Music and DVDs/Movies – the insertion listing fee is going to be even smaller – only 5 cent through the end of the year. Christmas is coming, people are going to shop like crazy and you can make good profit in these niches, too.

* Starting on 1 October 2008 and running through the end of year you qualify for free listing subtitle when free shipping is offered. This is another incentive announced by eBay recently to increase the marketplace’s competitiveness. If you can absorb the shipping fees and achieve bigger click-through-rate having eye-catching subtitles – you can subsequently increase the number of sales and increase the overall profit margin.

* SAT marketing and listing design strategies help you with optimizing the listings and achieve the best sales numbers from a single listing. This is invaluable because you have to balance the number of listings you submit to eBay with your sales figures.

You can’t expect having a good business just listing hundreds of listings and making occasional sales. You may think – ‘Once the listing fees are so low, I can literally flood eBay with them and make serious profit!’

The truth is – eBay have well thought over this and have repeatedly announced that their ultimate goal is to make the best performing merchants to appear on the top of the search results. This means – you have to list reasonable number or listings and make good amount of sales to earn performance bonuses in eBay’s eyes.

And this is what Spicy Auction Templates membership is all about – increasing listing quality and sales through rate!

But now – some other news from eBay. Recently they’ve opened a new online marketplace called WorldOfGood.com The main idea behind this new eBay shopping site is to make more environmentally friendly and eco positive products available for an average western online buyer.

Jewelry and pottery from natural materials, health and beauty animal-free merchandize, home and garden items like banana fiber baskets and handmade bone napkin rings – all this can be bought at WorldOfGood.com. As you can imagine, most of these goods are produced in third world countries and it helps local crafts people to top up their income and support their families. Very generous from eBay, isn’t it?

But this good deed has in turn sparked some other counter-action. And this time – from International Fund for Animal Welfare. Back in the 2007 this organization issued a report stating that the majority of illegal ivory originating from killing African and Asian elephants had been available on eBay.

eBay Germany and eBay Australia have already banned ivory goods from their websites, but eBay.com are reluctant to do the same. As eBay spokeswoman Nichola Sharpe has said, everything is being done to make sure that nothing illegal is being sold on the eBay website and all the proper policies are in place.

We have to agree with IFAW – the only way they could stop this is by banning such items from the website completely.

Well, let’s hope Sharpe is right and illegal ivory isn’t sold on eBay in big amounts. After all – what business activities could justify killing of endangered animal species?

Lately we’ve been hearing all sorts of news how eBay favor big sellers more tan eBay small business sellers – leaving individual sellers outraged.

For instance – when eBay bought Buy.com , they allegedly flooded search results with new listings which small sellers found very hard to compete against.

Yes, the whole world seems to be moving towards corporate business as opposed to individual. But it’s not the best model for eBay, though. eBay started off as a friendly community, and even though some of its spirit may have been lost, it still should be the place where stay-at-home moms can sell some stuff making nice extra income.

And now we have some happy news for eBay small business sellers – eBay recently changed the way the search results appear and it definitely makes the whole process more competitive. This time the eBay’s default search algorithm called ‘Best Match’ has been slightly modified to display the search results from as many different sellers as possible.

So let’s do a test search and see how the new change manifests itself!

We’ll type in some very typical search in eBay – let’s say ‘Xbox’ – one of the hottest selling items. And now let’s see what’s appearing in search results:

As you can see, at the bottom of the search results the following text appears: ‘Identical listings (meaning listings with identical title, listing format, and bidding activity) appear only once per search or browse results page.
To view all identical listings, please click here’.

So what it means for eBay small business sellers? To put it short – if a seller has listed loads of identical listings expecting to gain maximum exposure for maximum sales-through rate, it just won’t work anymore! It’s been the strategy of the big eBay sellers and has made it pretty hard for eBay small business sellers to compete. Well – not anymore!

The big sellers will certainly seek for new manipulative strategies to retain their market share, that is for sure. However, they have to be aware of eBay’s Search and Browse Manipulation Policy which states that eBay sellers aren’t permitted to engage in any activities with purpose to gain an inappropriate amount of market exposure. Good for small sellers, isn’t it? We at SAT agree at 100%!

So let’s recap and here are the main points that eBay small business sellers have to be extremely happy about:

* The display of identical items from the same seller has been limited to 1 per one page of eBay search results.

* The number of unique listings from one seller will be limited to 10 per a search results’ page.

Thank you eBay for this! Small sellers –

Have a happy auction!

Hi All – eBay sellers and also those who just want to embark on this promising and sometimes over-simplified thing called – online auction selling!

Why we’re saying – ‘over-simplified’? Simply because so many folks are being led astray by story tales that auction selling is as simple as 1st grade math! Yes – the truth is that ANYONE can start auction selling on eBay or other auctions – and even those who don’t know a single thing about selling tactics, strategies and the psychological aspects of the shoppers’ behavior.

But eBay sellers-to-be are simply mislead to believe that auction selling is much easier due to the fact that you have a guaranteed traffic. They think – ‘right, this is the easiest way to sell something online so I basically have to drop my product on eBay and everything else will take care of itself!’

However, having experienced the harsh side of auction selling, many of eBay beginners start getting that auction selling doesn’t differ by a great extent from any other types of selling. Selling from your own website, selling in off-line shops and even in a local marketplace. The basics of selling have remained the same for the last thousands of years and what people are looking for is – BENEFITS, not only the products!

Do you go to a shopping mall to buy the products or actually you want to buy nice and tasty dinner? Do people buy all sorts of things in order just to get those products? No, of course not! They’re attracted by what those products are GIVING them!

Auction selling is exactly the same but the downside of eBay selling is that a huge number of sellers simply follow the ‘stock – list – sell’ rule and don’t see outside the box. But the truth is that eBay doesn’t give the sellers all the necessary tools to make the selling process attract the shoppers. The shoppers will arrive sooner or later – that’s the beauty of eBay selling! – but very few of the sellers have grasped that by using the same techniques adopted by online merchants years ago they could easily double and even triple the sales amount!

How many times have you seen forum posts like this:

“I’m new to eBay and I want to start selling something. Can you help me with advice on how to list the items properly?”

And then a host of posts follow explaining all the technical details of auction selling and so on. But how many explain to such newbies that the selling strategies and techniques are probably even more important than the technical aspects of eBay product listing? So here are a few very useful tips that every eBay seller – both absolute beginners and hardened auction veterans – will find handy.

* If you don’t use eBay listing templates yet – start doing it right now. You can grab a pack of FREE eBay templates here and copy them in the HTML design view when creating a listing. These templates are designed for the best shoppers’ perception and it’s been scientifically proven that a human’s eye doesn’t scan the whole eBay default screen area.

You just have to have a fixed width product’s description box to make it comfortable for a shopper to read and the modern minisite design concept applied to our eBay templates design makes it even more customer-friendly.

* Include your photo in a listing – so that the shoppers can see that they’re buying from a friendly human not just some anonymous eBay ID. You can take a nice, smiling photo of yourself and upload it on the listings.

When your potential customers arrive at your listings, they’ll be nicely surprised of seeing someone’s photo in the first place! It will instantly bring down the highest barrier of doubts every eBay shopper has, and you next task is to take the shopper by the hand and lead him further down the listing description.

* Describe your product using BENEFITS. We can’t stress the importance of this! Auction selling is about giving the shoppers what they want and if you sell shoes and boots on your eBay listings – do you think you’re selling to a market wanting the shoes and the boots as such? No – they want the comfort shoes give them, they like the way modern shoes look, and they want to boast in front of their friends with fashionable foot ware!

So instead of plainly describing only the color, size and other features tell your visitors what your shoes will give them! The best way of doing it is to write the benefits in form of short sentences and mark them with bullets. It facilitates the perception and makes it very easy to read and understand.

* Give a strong guarantee! Online merchants have long ago understood the power of money back guarantee. You will definitely have to deal with such requests, but do you know how many extra sales you’ll gain having overcome your visitor’s fear of losing money if the product is not what they expect?

These extra sales will certainly offset the hassle you’ll experience with money back requests. And remember – you have to stress it with vivid images (download FREE Guarantee Graphics here) so that your shoppers notice it straight away! Just by writing in below the listing you won’t pull the trick – you have to tell the shoppers openly –

“If the product doesn’t meet your expectations – you can return it back to me for a money refund at any time within the next 30 days! No questions asked!”

These are the basic selling techniques having proved themselves throughout a decade of active online selling. But how many eBay sellers have you seen using such strategies?

We can tell you – not many! So what are you waiting for – start doing it right now! And to get to know a whole lot more of auction selling strategies and approaches – you’re welcome to join our community – while we’re still having our Summer Auction Treat offer!

This hasn’t been making the headlines lately – but did you know that a gang of 24 Romanian nationals has been arrested last week as prime suspects in a huge eBay fraud scheme? This time they managed to snatch a few millions from eBay shoppers’ credit cards before getting busted!

The Romanians are becoming notorious when it comes to online phishing and hacking. Low wages, low employment and high computer skills – these are the combined factors why Eastern Europe and Romania especially have become so active in eBay fraud cases.

Let’s remember how the cybercriminal Vladuz was arrested back in April this year for penetrating eBay’s secure servers. But this time Vladuz’s eBay fraud plot looks like school-boy’s attempts if compared to the new large scale fraud on eBay carried out by his fellow nationals.

So how did they do it? And what you, eBay sellers and shoppers have to be aware of in the future when pulling out your credit cards?

Well, their scheme was sophisticated and quite simple at the same time. They placed fake listings on eBay and other online auction websites. Those listings included links to websites hosted outside the auctions. Can you see the simple opportunity that opens up now for such fraudsters? Yes, you simply re-direct eBay shoppers to phishing websites where you collect their credit card information. And they never see the website again!

So we can assume that eBay fraud victims were offered to purchase the goods on those websites outside the auctions and they had no way of knowing that their money would be stolen.

But does eBay allow linking from the listings to outside websites? Well, actually it does! Although you can’t simply link to any website you want, this little loophole was just enough for the fraudsters to take the advantage. As the eBay linking policy states, eBay sellers may link from auction listings to a website whose primary purpose is to further describe the item sold on the listing.

Of course, eBay sellers can’t just link to their own shopping carts – the listings would be cancelled soon enough and the account suspended. And it can be actually argued if the listings with innocent links to descriptive webpages would be kept. eBay is famous of being very strict and sellers can’t prove the opposite when it comes to questionable eBay decisions.

But for the Romanian cybercriminal gang it was just enough to perpetrate the eBay fraud crime and get a number of people to visit their phishing websites. eBay can’t physically check every single listing created on their auction website. The only thing they could do is – forbid the linking completely…Can you, dear eBay sellers understand what it would mean for you?

It would mean you wouldn’t be able to generate ANY traffic to your websites using the few chances you have – from eBay About Me page, for instance. This means that fraud on eBay can directly affect also sellers, not only buyers!

Buyers have to be very wary not to leave the credit card details on some suspicious website. Sellers have to transfer more and more of their business activities to their own websites and focus on getting search engine traffic. What if one day eBay, forced by authorities, forbids even mentioning your company’s website on your eBay store?

This seems to be bothering eBay beginners more than PowerSellers since the last ones are already making a steady stream of profit in their eBay niches.

But finding what’s selling on eBay may be even a strategic question for experienced eBay sellers due to an ever increasing competition and need to find new niches and markets to start selling in. Besides, the online shoppers’ spending has been notably reducing due to the depression thus bringing the prices down and reducing the profit margins.

This all has made the question of what’s selling on eBay even more important than before. Many sellers have an impression they have to compete in markets of the hottest selling items on eBay. Just go to eBay Pulse and see what are the most popular searches on eBay – like ‘wii’, ‘ipod’ and ‘xbox 360’.

A big problem in these markets for honest eBay merchants is a high level of fake merchandise originating mostly from the Asia region. While it is possible to compete in such markets if you know the most effective eBay selling strategies, it’s always worthwhile to explore new niches and new profit opportunities.

A very good place to look for what’s selling on eBay is a page called Want It Now. This is essentially a separate eBay section where thousands and thousands of eBay shoppers post what they haven’t been able to find on eBay marketplace. Can you see the potential here?

In the main table you can see various posts by eBay shoppers – those are products, items and things they didn’t find using the eBay product search. In the column under ‘Responses’ you can see the amount of offers from eBay sellers.

Sometimes you’ll find people having posted in Want It Now items that can be easily found on eBay. But generally people go to Want It Now section when they haven’t been able to find what they’ve been searching for.

What you can do now is – you can browse the data throughout different categories and see if there is something mentioned multiple times. What you ideally are looking for is a trend in the people’s requests.

It isn’t, of course, a niche in the eBay market if a particular item has been mentioned just once or twice. But if you can spot a regularly occurring keyword appearing in eBay’s Want It Now section, you can take this opportunity and see if you’re lucky enough to find such products!

Browse through the categories. When you spot something that you have to offer – contact the person who wants it. Maybe he or she was just too lazy to search through the listings and is waiting on a seller to get in touch! So first start with items you already have for sale – just do a search using corresponding keywords.

When you spot a few similar requests, write down the words/descriptions people have used to describe the thing they want. Then do a search using those keywords in that category and also in related categories. If you find out that dozens of eBay buyers are searching for something they can’t find – you have an opportunity to find those items and offer them!

The research you’ll be doing using Want It Now doesn’t reveal what’s selling on eBay in the common understanding of those words. To see eBay hottest items you can use eBay Pulse and see the most searched items. But using Want It Now you can find small, hot niches eagerly waiting to be sold to!

Have a profitable eBay business,
